BAE Farmer's Market is OPEN - Saturday, 9 am - 1 pm (until 19 Nov)

Posted 9/16/2016 4:46pm by David Paulk.

Hello Farm Friends!

It should be a very comfortable, in the 70's, day tomorrow! Yay!  We hope you are enjoying this milder weather as much as we are.  The cooler weather means our veggies are definitely getting happier, as you will see some at market tomorrow, alongside summer vegetables.  It's that time of year when the bounty of summer starts colliding with fall, and we hope to see you, your family and friends at the market to enjoy the great diversity of the season!

Of note..we will have some  Canning Tomatoes for sale at this Saturday's (17 Sept.) market. We have 25-lb boxes of certified organic tomatoes for just $20! To reserve a box today for pick-up tomorrow, please see the tomato section below for more details.

What we'll have at market...

- Beets, Chioggia and Red (New!): We have sweet Italian Chioggia beets that are dark pink with a bulls-eye pattern inside. Very pretty and tasty on the plate or salad. Plus your traditional, always good, sweet red beets.

- Radishes, Lollipop and Red (New!): Beautiful and tasty mix of pink, red and white radish varieties, as well as beautiful, cherry red radishes. Great on a salad or by themselves as an appetizer. Try with a little butter and salt, which is how German and Eastern Europeans enjoy them. It may sound like an unusual combination, but they really compliment each other.

- Lettuce, Green Leaf and Romaine (Back!):  Fresh crunchy romaine and frilly, green leaf lettuce. Enjoy a cool salad this week!

-Arugula:  Of course, mix with salad greens, but also try on a sandwich or on top of pizza, as soon as it comes out of the oven, for a nice kick of spice and healthy greens.

- Basil: We have big, fresh aromatic bunches of basil. Sprinkle on pizza as it comes out of the oven, put on sandwiches instead of lettuce (BLB anyone?), and of course put on top of sliced tomatoes with a drizzle of olive oil and sprinkle of sea salt...now that is summer!

- Eggplant, Asian:  We have beautiful, sweet (not at all bitter) asian, light purple eggplants that are wonderful on the grill, simply sauteed with other vegetables or used in some very traditional dishes such as eggplant caponata (see eggplant recipes at www.sassafrascreekfarm.com/recipe).

- Garlic: We have big garlic for you! If you've never tasted fresh garlic, now's your chance.  So, easy to mince!

- Red Onions :  Freshly harvested. Tasty grilled (low to medium flame), sauteed or raw. These are crisper, fresher, sweeter and better tasting than any onions you'll get in the grocery store.

- Yellow Onions: These onions are perfect for grilling this weekend. They are very tasty, but don't have as high a sugar content as our red or superstars, which make them less likely to burn on the grill. Try them in shish-kabob today.

- Superstar Sweet Onions:  Yes, we have those wonderful vidalia-like sweet white onions that are wonderful raw in a salad, sauteed,  caramelized or grilled.

- Oranos Peppers:  We have those sweet, orange peppers that you like so much. We have more this week than last, but still limited quantity. The peppers got behind due to the very cold, wet weather we had in May, but the plants are starting to crank 'em out.

- Padrons:  For you loyal padron lovers...they are back!  If you haven't tried them, they are a super tasty tapas. Simply saute in olive oil whole, put on a plate and sprinkle with sea salt, and eat the whole pepper, minus the stem, of course.

- Potatoes, Red, White and Blue!  We have three kinds of tasty potatoes for you to try.  Mountain Rose is a great multi-use potato, pretty in potato salad with their blush color.  Your favorite blue potatoes that are great for roasting or frying, because they turn brown and crisp so nicely. We also have the German Butterball white potato that is similar to a Yukon gold and wonderful in mashed potatoes or boiled. Frankly, all three potatoes are great for many uses. Try one or all three...We have a mix for you!

- Shallots:  If you've never tried shallots, well now is the perfect time. They are in the onion family, but have their own unique, mild flavor that chefs love.  Wonderful sauteed with any veggies, but just imagine them sauteed with green beans...yum!

- Spaghetti Squash: For all you gluten free, low-carb, paleo, vegetarian, and everyone else in between...we've got fresh spaghetti squash for you!  So easy to microwave for just 15 mins after poking with a knife all over (important to remember). When cool, slice in half, scoop out seeds, and run a fork over the inside to release golden, sweet strands of yummy squash. Just top with spaghetti sauce, toss with pesto or sauteed vegetables, or anything you like. It's that easy.

- Cherry Tomatoes!!! We have the sweet, red cherry tomatoes and a limited number of the orange and yellow cherry tomatoes.

- Green Zebra Tomatoes:  We have a plentiful supply of those green (yes, ripe), tangy yellow and green striped heirloom tomatoes you love so much!

- Red Tomatoes:  We'll have a variety of great tasting red, slicing tomatoes to choose from. Great on sandwiches, in salads, and just sliced on a plate with a little salt, olive oil, basil and maybe some mozzarella.

- Canning Tomaotes: That is 25-lb boxes of certified organic tomatoes for just $20! What a deal! Reserve now and pick up at tomorrow's market!  They are perfect for fresh eating, canning, making sauce. It's super, duper easy. You’ll find easy instructions at www.sassafrascreekfarm.com/recipe.

To RESERVE 1 or more boxes, please email us at sassafrascreekfarm@gmail.com, and provide your NameNumber of BoxesPhone Number.  We have a limited number of boxes, so it is first come, first serve. We will reply with an email confirming if we have a box reserved for you.  Pick-up is at this Saturday's BAE Farmer's Market. If you can pick up by noon, that would be most helpful.

Don't worry about having cash at our stand -- we take credit, debit & SNAP.
